Corporate History

Cambridge Language Consultants specialises in providing services pertaining to English language. We originally incorporated in Cambridge, England in 1993 as Cambridge ESP Consultants, with a view to serving large corporations and banks. At that time our area of operation was mainly South Korea. In 1999, we changed our name and introduced a modified set of services, geared towards individuals in the academic and corporate environments who require specialised, quality, and reliable language services.

We are now a truly international organisation. We provide a worldwide editing and consulting service, with experienced editors drawn from a number of English-speaking countries.

Personnel

Our consultants are all highly qualified, holding a PhD in an appropriate discipline. All have functioned effectively in the academic and corporate worlds and have vast experience of proofreading and editing documents in a wide variety of subjects.

The Owner, Steve Mitchell, is an earth/environmental scientist. In 1998 he gained a PhD from the University of Birmingham in the field of sediment transport in estuaries. After that he worked for a short time as a consulting engineer and scientist before taking up a permanent post as a lecturer and now works at the University of Portsmouth, UK. He is the lead author of over 50 papers in the field of environmental and earth sciences, and is a member of the editorial board of the Journal Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, also acting as a reviewer for journal papers in this and other journals. He is a Chartered engineer and a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He currently does research in and lectures on estuarine science, sustainability, hydraulics and hydrology, and the relationships between business, ethics, finance and engineering.

The Executive Director, Chris Wright, is a former Fulbright Scholar and Carnegie Scholar. He has an MA (Hons.) from St. Andrews University, an MA in Philosophy (specialising in philosophy of science) from Pittsburgh University, and a Ph.D. from the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at Cambridge University. He has taught Philosophy as a Teaching Fellow at Pittsburgh University, a Supervisor at Cambridge University, and a Lecturer at Anglia University. In addition, he has given seminars on Wittgenstein and Nietzsche at Yonsei, Ewha, and Korea Universities in South Korea. He founded Cambridge Language Consultants in 1993 and has many years' experience of designing language programmes, teaching English, proofreading, and editing in Asia. He is a Member of the Pali Text Society. His research focuses on interpreting the earliest recorded teachings of the Buddha, which requires attention to certain topics in contemporary moral philosophy: virtue theory, vices, emotions, the nature of the self, and various other issues involving cognition, motivation, and affect. He is also interested in the nature of money and the economic consequences of different money systems. His leisure interests include Chinese painting, cycling, growing his own vegetables, and caring for his cats and guinea pigs.

Senior Editors

Kevin Flannelly received his MS in Psychology (psychobiology) from Rutgers University and his PhD in Psychology (physiological psychology) from the University of Hawaii, and has published research on clinical, cognitive, comparative, developmental, educational, physiological, social psychology, and psychopharmacology. He has also published extensively in sociological, neuroscience, psychiatric, nursing, medical, and other healthcare journals. In all, he has published over 150 peer-reviewed articles in more than 60 different scientific journals. In addition, he has been a peer-reviewer for over 40 scientific journals during the past 40 years, served on the editorial board of various journals, was the editor of a healthcare journals for 10 years, and is currently the editor of a sociology journal. He has done professional manuscript editing since 2013.

Gareth Thomas has a BSc in Chemistry, an MSc in Analytical Chemistry, a PhD in Environmental Chemistry, and over 16 years of experience as an academic researcher in the field of environmental chemistry and toxicology. He is based in the UK but has worked at overseas research institutes, and has collaborated with and supervised researchers from many countries. He has published over 60 papers, more than 20 peer-reviewed extended abstracts from international conference presentations, and in the Encyclopedia of Ecology (Elsevier). Gareth is a member of the editorial boards of three international academic journals and regularly reviews articles for a number of journals.

Sarah Binns qualified as a veterinary surgeon from Cambridge University and trained as an epidemiologist at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. She is a former Fulbright Scholar and Wellcome Trust Training Fellow and holds a PhD from the University of Liverpool and a Masters degree from the University of Illinois. She has worked in clinical veterinary medicine in practice and in academia, and has carried out research in epidemiology at the universities of Liverpool, Exeter, Bristol and Warwick. She has also worked in surveillance of veterinary endemic diseases and zoonoses and is a tutor on the distance learning programme in epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene. Sarah has published many scientific papers and has several years’ experience and training as a professional proofreader and copy-editor. She is a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS), The Society for Veterinary Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, the Association for Veterinary Teaching and Research Work, the European Association of Science Editors, and the Society for Editors and Proofreaders. Her major research interests are veterinary epidemiology, the epidemiology of infectious diseases and zoonoses, energy medicine and acupuncture, ethology, animal communication and animal welfare.

Cathel Kerr originally studied microbiology at Glasgow University and went on to complete a PhD on herpesviruses at Aberdeen University. He then specialised in electron microscopy and continued for a few years in postdoctoral research in Aberdeen. This was followed by a diploma in library and information studies, and after working briefly in medical libraries, he moved into medical and drug information work. He has worked as an indexer for EMBase and other pharmaceutical databases. Apart from being the author of several research papers, he was the news editor of Trends in Microbiology and is a regular news contributor to Lancet Infectious Diseases and Lancet Oncology. He has also previously worked as a copy editor for Springer and the Society for General Microbiology. Apart from editing and writing, he currently works with a number of pharmaceutical companies, helping in the production of product literature databases. All of this has given him a good general knowledge of the life sciences, and a full understanding of the publishing process, from basic research through to final publication. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals and the Society for General Microbiology.

Robert McKenzie studied botany at the University of Auckland, where he attained BSc and MSc degrees, and completed his PhD at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. He subsequently undertook postdoctoral botanical research in New Zealand and as a NRF Postdoctoral Research Fellow in South Africa, and is currently a research associate at the University of the Free State, South Africa, and continues to actively conduct and publish research on the South African flora. He began freelance editing for general publishers after completing his MSc in 2001. For 12 years he worked as an in-house Production Editor for the academic journal publisher NISC, responsible for all aspects of post-acceptance manuscript publication, for five biological research journals: African Journal of Range and Forage Science, African Zoology, Ostrich: Journal of African Ornithology, South African Journal of Plant and Soil, and Southern Forests: A Journal of Forest Science. He has extensive experience as a freelance academic English language editor in the plant sciences since 2007 (more than 1500 manuscripts language-edited) and is the author of over 30 academic research papers. His wide-ranging research skills cover areas of plant taxonomy and nomenclature, DNA sequencing and PCR techniques, microscopy, phylogenetic and ordination data analysis methods, pollination ecology, histology, cytology, and plant cell wall biochemistry. His current research is focused on plant systematics and evolution, specializing in groups in the Asteraceae family, phylogenetics, biogeography, morphology and reproductive biology, hybridization, and plant breeding systems.

John Ramsey received his PhD in Philosophy from the University of California, Riverside. He has taught courses on ethics, social philosophy, and the philosophical traditions of China. His research explores social identities and social roles and the extent to which both affect our moral commitments and shape our personal identities. He has published on these topics in specialist journals and general audience venues. Outside of philosophy, his reading interests include speculative fiction, ancient histories, and revolutions. He is an avid hiker, baker, and father.
