Frequently asked questions
Q. What happens when I arrive in New Zealand?
A. You will see a school representative with the
school sign at Auckland International Airport. They
will take you to the Domestic Airport. After a 40 minute
flight your homestay family will meet you at Mount Maunganui
(Tauranga Airport.)
Q. What happens on my first day at school?
A. Your homestay family will take you to school.
You should bring a pen and an exercise book. There will
not be a test. We will place you in a class for assessment.
Q. What is the school timetable?
A. Class begins at 9.00am. At 10.30 we have a break
for coffee and conversation and return to class at 10.50.
Lunch is at 12.00. Afternoon class starts at 1.00pm.
We have a 10 minute break at 1.55 and afternoon class
finishes at 3.00. Students often stay at school to chat,
listen to music and watch videos after school. The school
is closed at 4.30.
Q. What are the nationalities of the other students?
A. This depends on the season, but you can be sure
that you will make friends with both New Zealanders
and people from other countries - a great chance to
practise your English!
Q. If I have a problem, who will help me?
A. We have experienced teachers and welfare staff
who can help you with any problem, big or small. If
you need to speak to somebody in your own language,
native speaking counsellors are available.
Q. What can I do in my spare time? A. We
can help you to choose! If you like water sports, we
have beautiful beaches for surfing, windsurfing, canoeing
and swimming. You can play tennis and golf. Our students
have regular visits to the movies and to the pub. At
the weekend there are local tour companies who will
take you sightseeing, camping, river rafting, jet boating,
skiing or skydiving, whatever you like! If you want
to enjoy our beautiful town, there is good shopping,
good eating and a healthy walk on the beach or mountain.
Q. Does Mount Maunganui have snow?
A. No, never. Our climate is mild. The temperature
averages 12 degrees in winter and 24 degrees in summer.
The nearest snow is 4 hours away by car. Good skiing
in winter!
Q. What is the school's best point?
A. All our students tell us that they enjoy our
friendly, family atmosphere. Because our students are
relaxed, they make good progress with their English.
Q. If I choose an Activity course, what activities
will I do?
A. We want to make your activity programme as enjoyable
as possible. We will talk to you and arrange an interesting
programme from the following options: Introduction
to New Zealand activities - local history tour,
Maori crafts, school visit, kiwifruit orchard, wine
tasting, cooking, arts and crafts, fishing at the wharf.
Water activities - our well-known surfing
course as well as body boarding, sailing, diving, windsurfing,
kayak, snorkelling, swimming in the sea and hot pools.
Sports/Action - horseriding, Go Karts,
hiking, golf. Surfing - lessons. It is
important to understand that we have to arrange some
of these activities according to weather and season.
At different times there are different activities available,
according to local events taking place.
Q. When can I start an Examination Course?
A. Preparation for Cambridge examinations starts
in mid-March and mid-September, 12 weeks before the
examination. IELTS courses also start at these times,
to be ready for the July and February academic intakes.
We can arrange Pitman examinations at two weeks notice,
any time except December and January.
